How the animal and the element fit together
The animal runs on a twelve year cycle and the element on a ten year cycle. Because twelve and ten only line up again after sixty years, the full combination repeats once a lifetime. That is why a Fire Horse and a Water Horse are both Horses but are read differently, and why the element is the half that actually drives your colors.
Why February 4 decides your sign
The Chinese solar year does not begin on January 1. It begins on February 4, when the sun reaches a fixed point in its annual path. Anyone born between January 1 and February 3 belongs to the previous solar year, which means a different animal and a different element. Somebody born on February 3, 1990 is a Snake, and somebody born on February 5, 1990 is a Horse.

Why do you need my full birth date and not just the year?
Because the Chinese year begins on February 4, not January 1. Someone born on February 3 and someone born on February 5 of the same calendar year have different zodiac animals and different ruling elements. Any calculator that asks only for a year gets every January and early February birthday wrong.
What is the difference between my animal and my element?
